Comparisons
Quick answer
10 comparisons, each resolving a single buying decision. The recurring answer is that capability decides the tier and price only decides where you sit inside it, which is why a cheaper tool cannot be made to do a job it lacks the capability for.
TOPDON TopScan Lite OBD2 Scanner, Bidirectional Scan Tool, 8 Resets & AI
Full system access with live data is the tier that answers the most questions per dollar, and it is where most of these comparisons end up pointing.
Coverage varies by tool and by model year, so check a specific tool against a specific vehicle before buying.

Cheap code reader vs full-system scanner
A $16 reader only sees the engine. A full-system scanner reads ABS, SRS, and transmission too. Here is when the cheap option stops being enough.

Common questions
What is the single biggest difference between scanner classes?
Whether the tool can command a component or only read from one. Everything else, including price, screen size and brand, matters less than that. A read-only tool can watch a cooling fan fail to run; a bidirectional tool can order it to run and tell you in seconds whether the fault is the fan, the relay or the command.
Are brand comparisons here based on using the tools?
No. They are built from published specifications, the capabilities each manufacturer states, update and subscription policies and price positions. Nothing on this site is based on in-person use, and any site claiming hands-on testing of dozens of scan tools is telling you a story.
Does a higher price always mean more coverage?
Broadly yes within one brand, and much less reliably across brands. Coverage is a per-manufacturer, per-model-year matter, and a mid-priced tool with excellent coverage of one make can beat a more expensive generalist on that make. Check the coverage list for the specific vehicle rather than reading price as a proxy.
